McCafferty’s pastel powders with mortars, pestles, and brushes. For the base of his solar burns, he alternately used pure pigments and pastels. The pastels were crushed in a mortar with a pestle, then applied to the paper surface with a brush. The powder was fixed using a drawing fixative.
